June 4th 2001 The Posse formed up at the Nevada Landing Casino. The trail led west to Shenandoa Peak over past Goodsprings. These mines would be a challenge. Nearly 270 feet above us on the mountain was our target. Bill Durbin outlined "the plan". In short order we charged up the hill and surrounded the holes with wire. Tag'em and sign'em and off the next one. "Stay Out and Stay Alive" that's the goal!

But, this was no small task. Many mines to close. All day it was down the hill and back. More wire, more supplies were needed. Even this Posse couldn't do it all in a day. Two more days and the round up was complete. "What a great bunch to work with", the Sheriff proclaimed. "I'll let ya know when we move out again".

July 21, 2001 The Posse moves out again. This time from Pahrump Nugget Casino. Heading out to the Congress Mine area. Twenty two members strong and a Pahrump Valley Times reporter along for a story. This time we split up. Two groups rounded up 10 openings, re-secured another and turned up another 7 no one knew about. With supplies scarce we could only set posts on another 4.

That's 24 mines complete and another 4 started. It's a lot of work but, needs to be done. Unlike most State or Federal projects this ones funded by mine owners from all over the state. Forty or so Posse members are trained now. One day, with more help, we can spread out and get more done. Many people have been killed or injured because of these abandoned mines. "Stay Out and Stay Alive", that's the goal. "Good Job Crew" says, your Sheriff.

Sept. 28 & 29. The Sheriff and 23 Posse members rode out to the Nelson, Nevada area and closed off more mines. Some were only accessible by 4 wheel drive.

The Sheriff says "Thank you one and all! You did a great job". The crew ran out of material before they ran out of energy.

2003 Activities

January 25th 2003 marked the beginning for this years mine closure activities. The Posse went to the Searchlight area with the New Sheriff, Que Miller. At least 11 more mines were closed off and posted. This brings the total to over 50 since the Posse was formed. Thanks to who helped out!
