Click for Past Outings trips: Friends of the Club aka. " The Posse "
Following a presentation at one of our Club meetings by Bill Durbin, Geologist and Chief of the Abandoned Mine Program for the State of Nevada. The Club was made aware of an ongoing program to close and secure open but abandoned mine shafts throughout the state. With over 50,000 mine openings on both BLM and US Forest Service land. The effort to record, mark and secure these mines is a big job.. After viewing a video and discussion of the dangers to children, adults and animals that have been killed or injured going into or falling into abandoned shafts. A number of our members formed a group called "The Posse" to work with the Nevada Department of Mineralogy to secure these hazards. Weekend and occasional midweek outings are conducted to go to these old mine sites and secure them. The State of Nevada is providing all of the required tools and equipment to close the mines. Some mines are just posted as dangerous, while others are barricaded with steel posts, barb wire and signs. All effected mines are then recorded, photographed and logged in with the State Minerals Division.
